Over the weekend, a Yorkie that was inside a vehicle when it was stolen on Friday was found, along with the vehicle, at the scene of another crime. The Ingham County Sheriff’s Office shared on Facebook that the vehicle was discovered at a home invasion scene on Gunn Road in Delhi Township, with the Yorkie still inside.
Thanks to a homeowner who saw the suspect on their home surveillance system, the officers were alerted and able to locate the perpetrator, a 35-year-old Lansing man who was found in possession of the dog and car. Fortunately, the dog was unharmed and was returned to its owner.
The man was arraigned on Sunday on various charges including home invasion in the 2nd degree, possession with intent to distribute cocaine, receiving and concealing stolen property, and possession of burglary tools.
Sgt. Jillian Colby of the Lansing Police Department confirmed that the Yorkshire terrier was reunited with its owner over the weekend. Fortunately, no damage was reported to the car.
According to the officers, the theft of the car and the Yorkie was reported from Logan Square Plaza in Lansing on Friday at around 1 p.m. The Yorkie’s owner had left the vehicle running and unlocked for the Yorkie’s comfort.
While it’s understandable that the owner wanted to make sure their pet was comfortable, leaving the vehicle unlocked with the engine running makes it an easy target for thieves.
It’s important to remember that theft can happen anywhere and at any time, and pet owners should take precautions to keep their animals safe. Leaving a pet in a running vehicle, even for a short time, can be dangerous for the animal and make it an easy opportunity for a thief to not only steal the car, but also steal your beloved pet inside.
Just recently we reported on a poor Yorkie who was stolen from his family’s SUV as they entered a restaurant.
Therefore, we as Yorkie owners should avoid such behavior and ensure that our babies are safe and secure at all times.
